If you, or someone you know, is a freshman or sophomore in college, now is the time to take critical steps that will lead to internships.
Outset Career Prep works with students at all stages of their college journey. What we’ve seen is that the earlier students begin this process, the better outcomes they can achieve. Finding internships is a long process, not something you want to start mid-way through junior year. It takes time and preparation that can begin as early as the start of freshman year when choosing courses, clubs and extracurricular activities. We recommend that every college freshman learn about this process and develop a strategic plan of action during their very first semester of college. For students already in their sophomore year a more aggressive course of action is needed, but it is still possible to succeed with college internships if the right steps are taken immediately.
The importance of gaining work experience through internships during college.
Many students start college without a clear understanding of the problem. Put simply, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a good first job in your chosen field upon graduation.
Good grades are no longer enough. Test scores matter much less. Employers in science, technology, business, professional services and many other fields expect students to have significant work experience before graduation. As a result, students without college internships are half as likely to get a job, let alone the job they want.
Don’t take our word for it, the National Association of Colleges and Employers has studied this topic closely and their study concluded that “graduating seniors who have done a paid internship receive an average of 1.61 job offers compared to 0.77 job offers for those who have not done an internship.”

Steps you can take to increase your chances of getting internships during college:
Develop a plan to gain experience that will help you qualify for internships in your field when the time comes to apply. There are many ways to gain relevant experience starting at the beginning of freshman year, and the sooner you start this process the better outcome you can expect.
Present yourself on paper and online in a manner that will give you an advantage when looking for internships. Learn how college students should highlight their relevant experience and accomplishments consistently, using language that speaks directly to the needs of hiring managers, and how and when to use cover letters, portfolios and more.
Organize your search process for maximum effectiveness. If done correctly you’ll know when and where to search, how and when to leverage your network, and you’ll always have the right answers for potential employers at the ready. This is an important step most college students overlook completely when trying to find internships.
Become an expert about you. How are you unique? Why are you qualified? Where will you add value? With a clear methodology and plenty of practice you can be prepared to answer open-ended behavioral interview questions with stories that win over hiring managers. This is another area that many students neglect until it is too late. Interview skills should be developed early and often, as this skill is one that will not only help you get internships and offers upon graduation, it will benefit you throughout your entire career.
